The Apple Leopard
Developer Conference held in
Sydney late March was very
intriguing. It was the
first time Apple has sent
its Software Evangelist
team "down under " to
provide developers with a
Developer Conference / "road
show". The development
essentials in Leopard were
broken down into four
streams each day, which
covered the main new
functionality coming out
with Leopard.
These included
-
64 bit development notes
-
Resolution Independence
-
built-in Core Animation
for developers to use
-
Updates to Spotlight &
Quick look
-
Optimising Dashboard
widgets
-
providing "hooks"
for applications to link
to iChat and the like
-
Improvements to the
Calendar functions
-
possibility
of integration to the
address book; and
-
other tools are also on
the way
Xcode3, Interface
Builder 3 Cocoa are the main
tools recommended and little
was said about the
previously touted JAVA C++
development tools previously
recommended. Being a
Developer conference on
Leopard, issues of
cross-platform development
were not covered except that
Apple is committed to
supporting the Windows OS
and the release of Boot Camp
as an integral part of
Leopard.
JAM was invited to Cupertino
next June for the Worldwide
Developers conference where
there will be workshops for
converting Windows
application/developer to
Mac. The irony is that after
22 years as Mac developers,
JAM now fits into this
category. We hope to hear
further from the engineers
in the Apple Evangelist
group once they return to
Cupertino.
